Wealth Counseling

Wealth makes life easier, but relationships harder.

Wealth can be a wonderful relief from the many hardships of life.  It is what most people aspire to achieve, thinking that life will be completely happy once money is no longer an issue.  In reality, becoming or being wealthy is often a mixed blessing.  It complicates relationships, emotions, identity, and parenting.  Most of all, it can isolate you in ways you might never have imagined.

If you are new to wealth, you may be experiencing a set of reactions far different than what you may have anticipated.  You may also be struggling with the surprising number of skills needed for managing the money you now have.  If you have grown up in a family of wealth, you may have inherited financial security but also emotional insecurity or a lack of individual purpose with the resources in your life.  Further complicating the situation can be the loneliness experienced by those who have good fortune but few truly close relationships.

Some of the most common issues for wealth counseling are

  • raising responsible children with wealth
  • coping with sudden wealth
  • coming to grips with inherited wealth, which may feel unearned and undeserved
  • resolving conflicts within couples from different economic backgrounds
  • stressful relationships about money across generations or among siblings
  • struggles over financial support and spending patterns

Starting from a thoughtful evaluation of both stresses and strengths, FamilyWealth Consulting can design options which may include individual meetings in person or over the phone, combined sessions with family members, collaboration with your family's important advisors, psychological assessments, and coaching about financial or legal issues impacting the problem.   Many consultations include family meetings - a dynamic, complex, and intensive process that can lead to significant change.  Family meetings may occur over one day or several days to facilitate communication, work out conflicts, and foster next-generation leadership.  Ultimately, the primary focus is to support and enhance the strengths of you and your family.
